It is my firm belief that the older men get the more stylish they should become. I think that as they mature with age so should their style. Of course, if they are properly taught when they are nothing but whee tikes then I feel like this should be a natural progression. Unfortunately, most of the time this is not the case. However, I've noticed even though a man's style from ankle up might look good, what lies below the pant hem line may not always be so pleasing to the eye, at least my eyes.
There are probably only a handful of things that irk me more than a grown man wearing sneakers with an otherwise ok/decent outfit. I have no problem with children wearing sneakers because they do a lot of running and crawling and whatever else kids do, but grown, mature, supposedly responsible men... Unacceptable! The sneakers I'm talking about are the athletic, sporty kind. The kind that was designed for some sort of physical activity or sport. Unless of course said men are going to the gym or some other manly endeavor like bear wrestling. Sneakers are for exercising and outdoorsy things, not part of a fashionable attire. Sneakers or other athletic-y shoes take away from an otherwise decent outfit. It's like you do an eye scan from head to thinking looking good and then you get down to their feet and all of a sudden it makes you think of your little brother or that kid around the block you babysat, at least for me anyways. I feel like sneakers are a scapegoat for men to be lazy with how they dress. It's also immature, my opinion, I know, but seriously, a 40-year old man wearing sneakers everywhere, are you trying to reclaim your childhood or something?
This sneaker-wearing phenomenon also represents a double standard. How are men allowed to go around with their sporty shoes even if not doing sporty things but women most certainly aren't (you know it's true!)... I don't want equality for women to be allowed to wear sneakers whenever the feeling comes to them, but I want men to step up their game! We put ourselves nicely, the least you could do is slip on a pair of loafers, at least (Sperrys all the way here!)...
Currently, I am sitting at a Starbucks with a clear view of the entrance in front of me and I cannot tell you how many times my mother and I scanned men walking in looking otherwise decent but then we were seriously disappointed when we saw they were wearing sneakers on the other end. Instead, a nice pair of loafers would have done just as well; since it's snowing outside, a nice pair of boots would have looked good, too.
I put myself nicely even if it's for an evening class or simply running to the store for an errand, is it too hard to ask my male counterparts to do the same!?
