As you most likely have already seen and heard, a new Chanel No. 5 advert with Brad Pitt has hit the television sets with two videos. In both videos he poetically serenades us with a beautiful monologue going on about journeys and being where he is and the word "inevitable." However, in one video, we get to actually watch him as he serenades us; in the part two is we only get to hear his soothing voice played over a montage of scenes showing various images, including a woman, the bottle, -iconic in and of itself-, and some stairs. Now I can't tell whether this advert is supposed to be taken seriously, considering the mixed reviews I keep reading, but I sure as hell take Chanel N.5 seriously!
Though not much, very simple (and all the more classic), and definitely not extravagant, the romantic, poetic, writer spirit within me is completely enamored by both videos. What could be better than a longer-haired Brad Pitt spitting out a short monologue with a straight face and in deep thought?
Besides being the iconic Chanel No. 5, there is another reason the famous perfume holds a special and respected place in my heart and soul. A year -or two?- ago I read the biography of the perfume in Tilar Mazzeo's book The Secret of Chanel No. 5. After reading said book, I now have a very different appreciation of the perfume. As the book is described shortly on the Harper Collins website, is is "The unauthorized biography of the world's most famous, seductive, and successful perfume." If you have not already seen the ad videos, I'm embedding both below; and if you have not already read the book, either go to your closest library or order it online!
